KokDamon & Rahel @ MyTokyo

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

My wildy eccentric and creative KokDamon, his equally energetic and radiant girlfriend Rahel and I had a wonderful meal at MyTokyo at Causeway Bay. I really liked the restaurant before and when they closed their previous location so abruptly, I thought they had gone out of business. Turned out they just moved! And so tonight, Rahel’s last night in HK before returning to Switzerland, we decided to dine there as a fitting primer to Japanese food for Rahel. ;-)

It took us barely a few moments for Rahel to oh-so-precisely calculated that it had been 79 days (+365) since last met.. and it was a saturday! hahaha.. They had just come back from their 3 weeks trip to Laos & Thailand. It was such a fun night as we chatted about their trip, the cultural differences between the Chinese and the Swiss, the evils of portable gaming devices (which led to discussion of teenage drugs use and teenage boot camps in Africa).

All in all, it was a terrific night as we caught up with each other in a meal that lasted more than five hours. :) Check out the flickr set. Be sure to look at each pic and the description as there is a few tidbits on the context of the photos. ;-)

Flickr and Lil Dom

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

So it’s been a long time coming. Henry’s been urging me to use flickr for quite a while. For some time I have insisted on having my own gallery where I have complete control over the presentation of the images. But just like every part of my former website, it seems no longer feasible that I micro-manage every single aspect of managing the gallery/website.

And thus anal-retentive obsession has given way to ease of use and convenience as I migrate to Flickr. The first set of images is of Dominic’s new kitty, 小 Dom (Lil Dom). Enjoy!

Three New Sets!!

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

I have just uploaded three more sets of pictures! First is the set of pics from Cologne, Germany, and second from one of my favorite places, Heidelberg, Germany. Last is from Hawaiii 2004.. Yes.. it’s taken me almost three years to get them uploaded!!! But better late than never, right? ;-)

I have just uploaded them so please give me a bit before I add captions/description/noteworthy things to the images. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy the pictures!

Cooking Fun

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

So last night Fai and Carrie came over for a night of food + video games + movie. I was going to try the Chilled Cucumber Soup with Garlic Prawns from the Best of Delicious Book I got a few months ago. But I think I got the wrong creme and yogurt and it ended up tasting rather disgusting. So at the spur of the moment I decided to cook the pumpkin soup I tried last time. Right away, Fai and I went down to the grocery store nearby to pick up some pumpkin, onion, garlic, ginger, lemon..etc. It turned out to be a good decision!

The last time I tried this, it was really curry-y and coconut-y. In other words, it tasted more like curry than anything. So this time I really toned down on the coconut milk and curry. As a result, one could really taste the pumpkin-ness. The sweet tasting pumpkin provided for a good contrast with the citrus and sharp flavor of the coriander (cilantro)-lemon pesto. (Seen as a “A” above haha). (PS Sorry Carrie, I turned that loaf of bed into this rock-hard super toast! hahaha…. next time… :D)
I tried another new recipe for the first time as well, the Pork with Strawberry Balsamic Sauce. I was surprised by how tasty this was! And I even messed up the execution a bit! I accidentally cooked the pork on medium heat while trying to get both sides to be golden brown. It should have been on high heat. So and such I overcooked it a bit. I also thought the pork cutlets I got could have been of higher quality. Not to mention, I should have marinated the pork a lot earlier (as remarked by Fai) In any case, let’s talk about the good stuff!

First, the cool part.

I spent a much longer time than recommended to let the balsamic + chicken stock slowly heat through the strawberries. I was rather pleased with the effect!
The result:

The pork and the strawberries really off each other well here in the juxtapositions of texture, sweetness, and fragrance. Add the balsamic vinegar’s sour taste is a very interesting culinary symphony. I am really looking forward to making this again with 1)better quality pork 2) earlier/longer marinating and 3) better grilling. I think the result would be even more fantastic then!

Cycling @ Shatin/Daibo!

Sunday, April 15th, 2007
Since it was such a nice day today, we decided to go cycling at Shatin/Daibo 沙田/大埔. Then afterwards we went to have dinner at Sand corner 沙角 estate. The food was soooooo delicious and cheap! With all the food you see here, it costs us HK$68 (US$8.80) each! And they were so tasty!
