As a long time fan of the witty and intelligent series, I kept searching for a certain word for the new movie of Sex and the City. It wasn’t until three days after seeing it do I realize it.
It was an abomination.
On the surface it looks like the Sex and the City of old, but it was anything but. The characters don’t act or remotely resemble themselves from the six-year series. The plot is tailored made with over-the-top roller coaster arcs that lack the emotional and intelligent sensibilities that set the series apart from other soaps.
In fact, I would go as far to say that new fan to the series shouldn’t watch it either (aside from the fact that it’d spoil many many good hours of watching it on the DVDs). It would give them the wrong impressions and mislead them as to what the series would be like.
On an related note, I heard a joke on Wait Wait (which is my new favorite podcast). Supposedly, 85% of the people who watched the movie are women (fact). 10% of them are gay men, and the last 5% of them are boyfriends who did something very very very horrible to their girlfriends. (joke) Ha!
Ironically, Sofie, my gf, (also owner of the entire series on DVD) complained of boredom in the middle of the movie. Not only did she not enjoy the movie, she actually felt resentment towards it! But that soon ease after viewing of the old series on dvd.
I can’t help but feel that this movie was a product of the movie studio, rather than the original writers. Perhaps there was a good script in there somewhere when everyone signed on to the project. Then it was bastardized in the process to make it more populist and accessible to the new-comers.
In any case, this movie doesn’t really deserve any of my precious rant time. ;-)
